Challange:

Home seekers, many of whom are expats new to Dubai or international investors unfamiliar with the city’s areas, struggled to identify communities that fit their budgets. This lack of knowledge, combined with budget being the key factor in decision-making, made the home search process frustrating, time-consuming, and overwhelming.

RESULTS:

  • Engagement: Achieved 83 seconds average time spent and doubled session duration for DataGuru users compared to others.

  • Conversion: Achieved 2x higher conversion rates for users leveraging the Price Map.

  • Satisfaction: Improved user satisfaction scores through feedback-driven iterations.

Target User

  • Home seekers seeking properties that fit their budget.

  • Investors interested in understanding price ranges across communities and sub-communities for potential opportunities.

Research

The goal of the research was to examine how consumers interpret and react to the concept of an Affordability Map through moderated usability testing with a Lo-Fi prototype.

Key Findings:

  1. The overall response was positive, with participants recognizing that the map effectively visualized cheaper vs affluent areas across Dubai.

  2. Filter Usage:

    • Users seldom interacted with filters unless prompted.

    • They preferred entering monthly budget, family size, or connectivity preferences over using pre-set filters.

  3. Heatmap Understanding:

    • Users easily understood the color coding (cheapest to most expensive) due to clear labeling at both ends.

    • However, the middle color codes lacked clarity, making price ranges guesswork for users.

  4. Common "I wish I could see" requests:

    • Information on transportation, food, health, and education within specific areas or communities.

  5. Price was the primary factor, followed by secondary considerations like:

    • Bedrooms

    • Community types (villas vs apartments)

    • Location familiarity and connectivity

Key User Quotes:

“It starts with the amount or budget. I allow it to suggest areas to me, and then I see where it is, if I'm familiar with the area or not.”

“It’s price first, and then the secondary factors, which would be bedrooms, locations, apartment versus some other type of property.”

“The price is one of the biggest ones. Then, maybe, which areas have more villas versus apartment buildings.”

Solution

Introduced an interactive Affordability Map with:

  • Heatmap visualization to display price ranges at community and sub-community levels.

  • Option for users to input monthly budget and property preferences.

  • Clear color coding with price labels for all key price ranges (low, medium, and high).

  • Added data filters for transportation, healthcare, education, and other lifestyle considerations.

  • Designed a mobile-responsive version for on-the-go usability.

Validation

Validated the prototype with 12 users who all liked the concept:

  • Users emphasized that price was top of mind, but they also wanted information on:

    • Sub-areas within communities.

    • How well-connected the areas are in terms of lifestyle factors like transportation and amenities.

  • Users found the heatmap intuitive and appreciated the visual format, which simplified decision-making.

Final Product

A professional Affordability Map that:

  1. Visualizes price ranges across Dubai communities using an interactive heatmap.

  2. Allows for monthly budget input and filtering based on family size, property type, and connectivity preferences.

  3. Clearly labels all price ranges to remove guesswork.

  4. Integrates filters for lifestyle factors such as transportation, healthcare, and education.

  5. Features a mobile-responsive interface tailored for seamless access across devices.

  6. Offers valuable insights for both home seekers and investors, streamlining property search based on budget and preferences.
